평안북도 선천 출신의 계연수(桂延壽)가 1911년 초기에 편집하였다. 계연수로부터 1980년에 공개하라는 말을 들었다는 제자 이유립(李裕)이
1979년에 영인하였다. 이 책을 처음 번역한 사람은 일본인 카시마 노보루[鹿島昇]이다.
내용은 〈삼성기(三聖記)〉 〈단군세기(檀君世記)〉 〈북부여기(北夫餘紀)〉 〈태백일사(太白逸史)〉로 구성되어 있으며 고대 한국의 역사,
신앙, 풍습, 정치, 경제, 예술, 철학 등에 대한 풍부한 자료가 담겨 있다.
상하 2편으로 이루어진 〈삼성기(三聖記)〉는 신라의 승려인 안함로(安含老)와 행적을 알 수 없는 원동중(元董仲)이 쓴 것이다. 환인(桓因),
환웅(桓雄), 단군(檀君)을 중심으로 민족의 기원부터 단군조선의 역사를 간략히 서술하였는데, 1421년에 세조가 전국에 수집 명령을 내린
〈삼성기〉와 책명이 일치한다. 한인으로부터 7세 단인까지 3301년의 역사와 신시시대의 한웅으로부터 18세 단웅까지 1565년의 역사를
서술하고 있다.
